You are responsible for your actions.

I suffered a second-degree burn on my right palm and fingers last week. For a bit there, right before I almost passed out from the pain, I thought there existed no word in the dictionary to define what I was experiencing. It was sheer torture. And while I was in massive pain, I could think of nothing but “why me?” I literally looked up above and asked, “why?” Oddly enough, “I can’t type now” was the first thought that crossed my head.

I was mad at the divine for “having done this to me.” Two days passed by, and the pain became tolerable. That’s when it dawned on me; this divine guy is not sitting all pretty up above and plotting, “ooooh, let me torture the girl wearing red PJs with pug prints today!” He has better things to do, am sure! That’s when I realized it was me who was responsible for the injury. I should have been more careful. Your life is your making. No one else’s.

Here are some of the life lessons I learned from my injury that might help you:

1. Your health is of utmost importance so do take good care of it.

2. It is not all about work. You see, my first thought was “how can I possibly use my computer now,” but I find it harrowing to even ponytail with one hand.

3. Don’t blame anyone. While this can provide a temporary solace to your ego, it’s just a way of fooling yourself.

4. Forgive yourself. Sometimes you are smart to learn from others’ mistakes, and sometimes you make your own, and that’s ok. Learn from it & grow.

5. You are strong ‘cos what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

6. Lastly, allow yourself time to heal. Try not to get impatient with it.

You don’t have to defiantly go about some of the things we seem discontent about and remain shackled but surface what’s important:

If you don’t like the way you look, eat healthy. If you don’t have enough, work for it. If you got no peace of mind, meditate or go on a social media detox for a bit ;). If you hate the government, vote better (Don’t be a fly on the wall, pun intended.)

Final Thought:

You are a human, so you are allowed to throw yourself a pity party for a bit, I mean, you cannot be li’l miss sunshine when you got yourself a burnt hand, but you need to “drink your juice, Shelby” and decide an end-time for the boohoos ’cos YOU are bigger than your pain. Let that sink in.

P.S: A special shout-out to 911. I know this is their job, but they do it with love, and that makes all the difference.
